Tanking for Dummies


PTR Patch Notes (Patch 3.2)

Ah, It’s good to be back.

One of the big things in warrior land that hit while I was missing in action was the PTR came up for Patch 3.2.  with the following Warrior changes:

  • Talents
    • Fury
      • Armored to the Teeth: This talent now provides 1/2/3 attack power per 108 armor, up from per 180 armor.
      • Bloodsurge: Notification that Slam has become instant now appears in floating combat text.
    • Protection
      • Devastate: Weapon damage increased to 60% and bonus per Sunder Armor on the target increased by 20%.
      • Shield Specialization: Now provides 5 rage on a block, dodge or parry instead of 2 rage on a block.

That seems like a flat out buff to me, but let’s break it down.

Armored to the Teeth

This is just a nice flat bonus to attack power to a talent that I think most of us have no matter what our spec is.  I mean, that’s a flat increase of %60!  For Tarsus, it boils down to a boost of about 90 attack power, a small but nice increase!

Bloodsurge

Not really for Prot, but this is a bonus for those of you using the base UI for your Fury-ness.

Devastate

Okay, there’s two ways for me to read this.  One way this is a nice but small buff – which is to say that the 20% number represents a 20% boost to the flat damage bonus (a boost of 20 damage per sunder application at rank 5).  The other way to read it is they mean an extra 20% of weapon damage per sunder application, bringing it up to a total of 160% weapon damage at 5 sunders.  Hubba hubba.

Anyone on the PTR that can give us some clarification on this?  Did Blizzard just give Devastate the huge buff it sounds like?

Shield Specialization

Well isn’t that a fine how-to-do?  Those of you out there stacking avoidance are likely to be happy with this one, but I would caution against getting too excited.  Even presuming you have 100% combat table coverage (and I hope you do), you still would only generate a maximum of 300 rage per minute (assuming of course that nothing attacks more that once per second) from this ability.  Hardly the solution to rage starvation that be the bane of stacking avoidance on Warriors.

Don’t get me wrong here, I think we’re likely to notice the increase in rage (300 rage is quite a lot of heroic strikes) but this is really just a bandage on the whole issue of rage while in Defensive Stance.

On that Note…

We’ve have some pretty interesting statements on Warrior Development from the Crab.  There’s a lot to go through there so consider it some advance reading for Friday where I’ll try to tackle this in more depth.

What we really need is a buff to boost us up with other tanks, in terms of survivability or bring them down to our level, the threat for a warrior is fine even without vigilence IMO, for me its more a tool than anything else.

Still a bonus sunder effect will make us very popular with the DPS.

The difference I see for Warriors is that unlike other tank classes we actually have to take damage in order to produce threat. Even Paladins at this point have more freedom to stack avoidance than Warriors because their “blue rage bar” is full at the start of the fight. That mechanic is under discussion, so I’ll go into more depth on Friday about my thoughts on it.
